Let’s be Real: The Holidays with an Eating Disorder Stinks

I’m always a fan of calling it like it is, so let’s be real, the holidays with an eating disorder stinks. Now I know what you’re thinking, Gross the average person consumes at least 3,000 calories at Thanksgiving. Oh my goodness, no way am I eating that much. That’s like hours of working out. I need to go to the gym all day Friday anyway, just from looking at all that food. How do people eat that much without getting sick. So disgusting! And if one more aunt asks me why I look so thin, I’m going to scream. Please people, just because I don’t want to eat a massive amount of food doesn’t mean I have a problem. Maybe you’re the one with the problem because you eat so much. Oh and those horderves, how can people eat those and then eat dinner?

Does this sound about right?

But this year, I want to challenge you to think differently. And the choice is yours to make. Because you see the sufferings people experience often leads to incredible joy and success when those who have suffered greatly decide to turn their sufferings into seeking beauty. Instead of dwelling on your eating disorder or feeling trapped by your past, try your best to mimic and cooperate with God, who will, with your cooperation (faith and hope), do His best to turn everything into good. However, He needs your participation, determination and perseverance. Remember you are only human and will fall, move backward, succumb to discouragement, which is the first fruit of self-love. But you have been instructed by His Son to get back up. As this it the calling for each and every one of us.

So Instead of focusing inward on how many calories you will or will not consume, or as you dodge unwanted glances and questions from relatives, focus on where you want to go in life. Focus on how far you have come in your journey of recovery, instead of dwelling on negativity, which will get you no where. You are alive. Be grateful and give thanks. So tomorrow when you wake up, make the choice to rise from the ashes and choose to see beauty over calories.
